The refurbishment and extension of a listed Georgian townhouse provided an opportunity to introduce bold materials and interventions within the characteristically elegant setting of a late Georgian building. The emphasis of the proposals throughout was to bring these two characters into a complimentary balance.
A new extension sits gently within the surrounding brickwork. It is formed from a cruciform glazed roof structure that clings to its masonry perimeter, and a set of glazed doors that echo the materials and detailing of the roof.
The upper floors of the existing building were composed of a series of smaller rooms and spaces. The proposals sought to retain and work with this aggregated plan form, but to link the smaller spaces through new connections and repeated use of specific materials and details.
