The ground floor of this new mews house presents a quiet face to the street, whilst fully opening up to the dappled light of its sheltered garden. The robust brickwork of its garden facade is echoed in the massing of the interior, but there is a shift in the material palette towards a more varied and generous tactility.
The design of a new basement fully embraces its necessarily restrained use of natural light sources. A large studio room is bookended by natural light spilling down a stair void at one end and garden pavement lights at the other. Contrast and chiaroscuro are used to give the studio space a visual warmth and drama that is reiterated by the material choices and design detailing.

A new mews house with a basement studio was constructed opposite the St Mary's Townhouse project. The mews house was designed as a sibling to the townhouse, to complement its architecture and interior, whilst benefitting from a different scale of architectural detailing and interior space.
