This mews house was entirely rebuilt with a new basement extension, except for three retained facades. These facades are an important part of the building's charm but allow only limited natural light to filter into the interior. The proposals play with these limitations to introduce zoning into the square plan and to orchestrate moments of passing light and shadow.

A new stair core was installed in what had been the darkest part of the building, and with a new rooflight above it now brings light deep into the plan, giving glimpses of the passing clouds above. The structure of the new staircase cascades out of its corner location and the internal walls are given a curved form, further echoed in that of the stair.

The top floor of the property was more tightly planned to accommodate all of the client's practical requirements. Again the careful use of light alongside a restrained material palette allow these smaller spaces to breathe.
